Site analytics policy

Counting visits, not people.

Roger Maragh's sites use one small first-party script, served from xyzyo.com, to count page views and followed links. It replaces third-party analytics. This page describes what it sends, what is kept and who sees it, for every site listed below.

What each page sends

For each page view: the page's address without its query string (so never a search, serial number or form entry), the name of the site that referred you (not the page you came from), any utm campaign tags in the address, and the width of the browser window. When you follow a link to another site, it records the kind of link and where it leads: the site and path for Roger Maragh's own sites and app-store pages, and the site name only for anything else.

Where a site is served through Cloudflare, Cloudflare adds a two-letter country code. Other sites show the country as unknown.

What is kept

To tell visitors apart within one Eastern Time day, the service makes a keyed hash of your IP address, browser user agent and the site, using a random value that changes every day. Your IP address and user agent are not written down. The day's records are kept until the day ends. They are then turned into totals (page views and visitors per page, source, country, device type and browser family, and followed links) and deleted together with that day's random value. Totals are kept for up to 400 days. The same person counts again on a new day.

Separately, each site's web server keeps ordinary access logs to run and protect the site; their daily page counts are compared with the script's totals as a cross-check.

What it does not do

  • It does not set cookies or read browser storage.
  • It does not record what you type, search for or look up.
  • It does not build a profile of a person or follow anyone across days.
  • It does not identify people through reverse-IP lookup or share data with advertisers.
